Roland Garros: a massive undertaking

Four phases of work

Modernisation of the Roland Garros stadium was carried out in four phases over a period of three years (2017-2020). The teams in charge of this project had to work around an annual stoppage when the Grand Slam tournament was underway.

The first phase of work involved consolidating the central court's foundations which were much heavier than the previous infrastructure. The second phase consisted of taking down the existing stands and reconstructing them. The third focused on fitting out the changing rooms, lounges and restaurants, while the fourth was devoted to installing the mobile cover.

A record timeframe

This keenly anticipated and complex cover installation was completed in a very short time. The last wing was fitted on February 5, 2020, one month ahead of schedule and the tournament's 2020 edition. The teams led by VINCI Construction - the primary contractor - were operating onsite within a few days of the 2019 Roland Garros tournament's final matches, enabling them to complete this complex project in record time. The various wing section assembly and hoisting stages spanned eight months of on-site work.

Complex installation

The retractable roof is made up of 11 steel beams, designed and manufactured by the Italian company Cimolai. The beams were delivered on site in 7 sections and assembled in the central aisle at Roland-Garros. The wings were then hoisted on the sliding rails overlooking the Philippe-Chatrier court. Once assembled, these were backed with Flexlight Xtrem TX30-2 and the interior wall covered with acoustic Alphalia Silent AW panels. All of these elements were assembled by the Tensaform company.

Wings 105 metres long

The mobile elements cover a total of 1 hectare, involving no less than 25,000 m² of membrane to cover the steel frame. Each wing is 105 metres long and 3 metres high. The entire assembly can be deployed within no more than 15 minutes. Gearwheels on each side drive the wings on two rack rails fitted to the top of the stands. Deploying the entire structure is carried out by two synchronized electric motors.
