Serge Ferrari is the world leader in flexible composite materials and enjoys working on innovative projects. If the Boris Yeltsin Museum in the Russian Yekaterinburg is anything, it is certainly innovative. This new museum aims to preserve and illustrate the recent historical heritage of the Russian presidents after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Boris Yeltsin, the first president of the new Russia, is central to this. Using the latest technology, the museum tells the story of his life using modern language.
Large glass dome as a challenge
The impressive building has a large glass roof. To protect the works of art and presentations from sunlight and to make them as attractive as possible to visitors and to block out heat, a solution for shading was needed. Not an easy task, given the size and structure of the canopy.
The Dutch company Guillaume Janssen had the perfect solution for this challenge with MSW Dome with Soltis Perform 92. This is a curved triangular screen specially developed for large glass surfaces to regulate sunlight and block heat. The screens follow the curved shape of the dome, which fully preserves the architectural appearance of the building.
Extremely strong fabric
Because the canopy is in fact a curved triangular system, the awning systems must be installed with very high tension. This is only possible with very strong fabric that has sufficient diagonal strength.
Functional and aesthetic
Soltis Perform 92 blocks bright light and heat but has transparent perforation so visitors can continue to enjoy the light. On hot days, the white fabric reflects. The fabric rolls up in a compact cassette at the bottom.
Thanks to the joint work of Serge Ferrari, Guillaume Janssen and Wellsun, the museum now has an aesthetically pleasing and durable solution for regulating light and heat.
