Wild Coast Tented Lodge is a luxury hotel in the south in Sri Lanka, on the edge of Yala National Park. Thermal comfort, protection against insects and snakes and resistance against the weather conditions of the region were therefore key elements to be considered. Use of Flexlight Classic 782 and Alphalia Silent Aw enabled them to meet this challenge.

The architects spent considerable time assessing the options proposed by a range of manufacturers. They needed to find a material that would resist extreme heat in summer, torrential rain in the monsoon season and the various animals living nearby. Following a detailed evaluation of the options available on the market, Nomadic Resorts decided to call on the expertise of Serge Ferrari.

As early as the pre-sale and model stage, Serge Ferrari’s team provided project design support for the architects. After assessing the benefits of the Flexlight range, Nomadic Resorts chose the Flexlight Classic 782. This was manufactured in the desired colour and provided the technical specifications required for the environment.

The membrane was fitted by a British engineering company and welded in Sri Lanka. The fabric adjusted perfectly to the structure. However, the end client was still concerned about issues regarding long-term maintenance, afraid of difficulties in replacing the cotton liner initially envisaged in the event of soiling. Arun Madapallath, Serge Ferrari’s regional representative for South Asia, suggested using a Alphalia Silent Aw membrane inside, which would provide both acoustic insulation and an attractive textured finish. A few months later, the new lining was fitted.

The architects were highly satisfied with this result and extended the principle to using the fabric with locally-sourced teak to create paneled huts for the toilets and bathrooms.

The hotel has since opened its doors and has been given enthusiastic reviews by many specialised journalists.

The success of this project was crucial for Nomadic Resorts. It was essential for the architects to benefit from the support of a reliable partner to be able to propose the right materials to the hotel and deliver a high-quality product on time. This hotel, which blends so naturally into the Sri Lankan jungle, therefore discreetly benefits from the most innovative materials on the market.
