A sun-protected play area through textile architecture in Altea

In Altea, on Spain’s Mediterranean coast, a children’s park has been equipped with a large textile canopy to enhance user comfort and protect play areas from intense sun exposure. Designed and installed by Technitoldo, a Spain-based company and long-standing client of Serge Ferrari Group, this textile architecture project covers 1,400 m² and transforms the park into a more pleasant and functional space for families.

The challenge: creating shade in a highly exposed play area

Located in the province of Alicante, the city of Altea enjoys a particularly sunny climate for much of the year. In this context, creating effective shaded areas was essential to allow children to enjoy the playground facilities while being protected from solar radiation.

The solution needed to meet several key requirements:

• deliver high-performance sun protection,
• ensure a durable and resilient structure,
• integrate seamlessly into a playful and colorful environment.

The solution: a high-performance and aesthetic textile canopy

To address these challenges, Technitoldo implemented a textile architecture system consisting of a tensioned canopy supported by stainless steel cables and steel anchoring pillars with ground bracing.

The structure is clad with Soltis 86 fabric by Serge Ferrari Group, selected for its solar protection performance, durability, and visual comfort. Used in multiple colors, the fabric also adds a strong aesthetic dimension, helping to create a vibrant and attractive space for children.

A more comfortable and attractive urban space

Thanks to this large-scale textile installation, the park now benefits from an extended shaded area, allowing for more comfortable use throughout the day.

This project perfectly illustrates the potential of textile architecture to enhance the quality of public spaces by combining technical performance, design, and climatic comfort.
