A Colorful Canopy for Colegio El Recuerdo
About
Serge Ferrari Group contributed to the creation of a series of textile shade sails for the playground of Colegio El Recuerdo in Madrid, Spain, using Tenseo Frontside 381 and Soltis Proof 502 membranes.
An Educational Project Focused on Children’s Comfort and Well-Being
Located in northern Madrid, Colegio El Recuerdo sought to transform its kindergarten playground to provide a more comfortable, safe, and functional shaded outdoor space for its youngest students. The primary objective was to protect play areas from the intense solar exposure often experienced in the Spanish capital while maintaining a bright, open, and stimulating environment.
Designed and led by the architectural firm JRB Arquitectos and delivered by BAT SPAIN, a long-standing Serge Ferrari Group partner specializing in the construction, installation, maintenance, design, and engineering of textile façades and textile architecture projects worldwide, the project reflects an architectural approach that combines functionality with creativity and sensitivity. Inspired by nature, the design draws on organic forms throughout: the steel structure evokes tree trunks, while the sails themselves resemble colorful foliage that is both lightweight and protective. Through the careful use of shapes and colors, the school playground has been transformed into a playful and immersive environment where the surroundings actively contribute to children’s well-being and development.
Tenseo Frontside 381 and Soltis Proof 502 Create a Shaded Outdoor Environment
To meet the project’s requirements, two Serge Ferrari Group membranes were selected: the micro-perforated Tenseo Frontside 381 and the waterproof Soltis Proof 502, available in green and yellow shades inspired by natural foliage. Manufactured as triangular sails tensioned over a galvanized steel structure, these membranes create a lightweight canopy covering approximately 260 m². The combination of open and solid fabrics provides an ideal balance between solar protection, natural ventilation, and weather resistance.
The two Serge Ferrari Group membranes deliver several key benefits:
- Effective reduction of solar heat gain, ensuring enhanced thermal comfort
- Preservation of natural daylight thanks to Tenseo Frontside 381 and its openness factor
- The creation of dynamic, ever-changing shade patterns that contribute to a visually stimulating environment
- Seamless aesthetic integration made possible by a color palette inspired by the natural world
Beyond the technical performance of the membranes, this project demonstrates how textile solutions can sustainably transform outdoor educational spaces to support children’s well-being. Lightweight, safe, and visually engaging, the new playground has become a vibrant living space that encourages both play and learning.
