Shade sails in Tenseo Frontside 381 for Plaza de la Reina in Valencia, Spain
About
Serge Ferrari Group contributed to the redevelopment of Plaza de la Reina in Valencia, Spain, by supplying Tenseo Frontside 381 membranes for the installation of urban shade sails.
A Historic Square Reimagined to Meet Urban Climate Challenges
Located in the heart of Valencia’s historic center, Plaza de la Reina is one of the city’s most iconic public spaces, just steps away from the cathedral. In 2019, the city council launched an extensive redevelopment project that included the complete pedestrianization of the square, creating a more welcoming environment for walking while encouraging cultural and recreational activities. In response to the high temperatures typical of Spain’s eastern coast, one of the project’s key objectives was to improve thermal comfort for visitors without compromising the site’s architectural character or its historic heritage. Creating effective yet lightweight shading therefore became a central component of the redevelopment.
AWMA Sun Control Solutions, a specialist in solar shading systems, was commissioned to design and install a solution tailored to this demanding urban environment. A total of 19 square and rectangular shade sails, tensioned between steel posts, were installed across Plaza de la Reina. Combining functionality with elegant design, these lightweight structures provide welcome shade for pedestrians and visitors while contributing to the visual identity of the city center.
Urban Shade Sails Featuring Tenseo Frontside 381
Serge Ferrari Group’s Tenseo Frontside 381 membrane was selected for the shade sails. Manufactured using Précontraint® technology, this composite membrane combines high-performance solar protection, controlled transparency, and a wide range of color options, enabling the creation of distinctive and highly effective shading structures.
Tenseo Frontside 381 blocks up to 85% of solar heat while providing excellent visual comfort. Highly resistant to weathering and offering exceptional dimensional stability, the membrane is also printable, opening up virtually unlimited creative possibilities for architects and designers.
Beyond their primary shading function, the Tenseo Frontside 381 shade sails have become an architectural feature in their own right within Plaza de la Reina. This project perfectly demonstrates how Serge Ferrari Group’s technical textiles can transform urban spaces by combining climate comfort, enhanced user experience, and contemporary architectural expression to create more enjoyable and resilient cities.
