Serge Ferrari brings shade to new One Sydney Harbour high-rise complex with Soltis 88 LowE
ABOUT
Serge Ferrari Group has brought its contribution to the One Sydney Harbour project, supplying Soltis 88 LowE shading for the new development’s three high-rise buildings.
An ambitious project for a revitalised Barangaroo
Located in Sydney, Australia, the Barangaroo precinct was once an industrial and maritime hub, shaped by the long-time influence of sprawling shipyards, then later on cargo shipping operations. However, since the mid-2000s, the area has seen a series of new developments intended to revitalise the shoreline, with the creation of a brand-new business precinct blending harmoniously contemporary architecture with rehabilitated heritage.
One Sydney Harbour is no doubt the most ambitious of all the developments launched within the precinct and will epitomise Barangaroo’s new modern and dynamic identity. The design consists of three residential towers, rising respectively 250 metres, 235 metres and 107 metres in height. The buildings primarily house high-end residential units, offering breathtaking views over Harbour Bridge and the world-famous Sydney Opera House.
All three buildings were constructed on top of a single, three-storey base, home to an array of mixed-use commercial and retail spaces. This mix not only improves the quality of life for residents, but also contributes to this fast-changing precinct’s economic vitality.
A powerful concept
The One Sydney Harbour project was designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, in collaboration with PTW Architects. Construction was delivered by Australian contractor Lendlease.
The design for the three towers was guided by a shared concept that integrates seamlessly with the City of Sydney’s vision for urban revitalisation. Their shimmering envelope draws inspiration directly from the play of light and reflections over the water of Sydney’s harbour, where the regular flow of waves creates an endless kaleidoscopic effect. Rather than create an artificial design, the team envisioned a dialogue between land and sea.
Soltis 88 Feel Low-E: advanced solar protection
The extensive use of glass curtain walls on all three buildings required the design team to look for effective shading solutions. Ultimately a specially developed colour of Soltis 88 Low-E was developed specifically for this project and a total of 45,000 sqm of this high performance shading membrane was fitted to all three buildings.
This advanced solution, placed externally between the glass windows and the outer envelope, acts as a thermal shield. In the summer, as solar radiation increases, the fabric stores heat, blocking it from being reemitted internally. As a result, indoor temperatures remain more stable, reducing reliance on air conditioning systems and minimising energy costs. In addition, Soltis 88 LowE ensures greater comfort for occupants, while still offering optimal visibility to outside.
Production and installation were delivered by Climate Ready Engineering, based on a completely automated bespoke tensioned facade shading system specially developed by blind specialist Guthrie Douglas Ltd.
