Soltis 86 serving sustainable urban living in Utrecht.
ABOUT
A sustainable landmark for the arts community
In the heart of Utrecht’s new Cartesius district stands Cartesius Solo, a striking residential complex designed by Zecc Architecten. Completed between 2018 and 2023, Solo provides 140 modern apartments, specifically designed for residents active in the cultural and arts sector. True to its motto “healthy and green”, sustainability is at the very core of this project, from its architectural concept to the choice of building materials.
A vision brought to life by Guillaume Janssen
The solar shading systems—more than 400 units in total—were delivered by Guillaume Janssen and installed by De Kroon Zonwering. Their expertise and precision ensured seamless integration of advanced shading technologies into the building’s façade. The client’s main requirement was that all shading systems be connected to the solar panels. Thanks to the implementation of solar-powered motors, every screen operates autonomously, eliminating the need for extensive cabling while aligning perfectly with the project’s sustainability objectives..
Soltis 86 – Performance and aesthetics combined
At the heart of the solar shading system is Soltis 86 Moss Green, a high-performance fabric by Serge Ferrari. This choice was not only functional but also aesthetic: the green tones harmonize beautifully with the building’s color scheme and surrounding environment.
Key benefits of Soltis 86 include:
- Excellent transparency & natural light: allowing residents to maintain outward views while enjoying natural light indoors.
- Thermal protection: blocking up to 75% of solar heat, reducing reliance on artificial cooling.
- Energy efficiency: optimizing daylight use, thereby lowering electricity consumption
- Durability: ensured by Serge Ferrari’s patented Précontraint® technology, which guarantees long-term stability, resistance to deformation, and outstanding mechanical performance
Meeting deadlines without compromise
One of the decisive factors in choosing Guillaume Janssen and Soltis 86 was fast delivery. The project had to be completed before this summer, requiring flawless logistics and coordination. Thanks to the installer’s efficiency and Serge Ferrari’s reliable supply chain, all shading systems were installed on time, without compromising on quality.
A green legacy for Utrecht
By combining innovative architecture, advanced solar shading, and eco-friendly design, Cartesius Solo stands as a reference project for sustainable urban living. The integration of Soltis 86 not only provides thermal comfort and UV protection to residents but also reflects the district’s commitment to a greener, healthier lifestyle.
Through this project, Guillaume Janssen once again demonstrated their expertise in delivering high-quality solar shading solutions, reinforcing their reputation as a trusted partner in architectural innovation.
