An innovative roof for the Temuco ice rink
ABOUT
An innovative roof for the Temuco ice rink: an architectural project in the service of sports.
The eight skating clubs in the city of Temuco, Chile, finally have an accessible training venue available year-round, fulfilling a long-standing demand. Located in a region where weather conditions are often harsh, the need to protect the ice rink at the Bicentenario Stadium park had become imperative. With the unanimous support of the municipal council, this ambitious project is now a reality, greatly benefiting local young athletes.
In 2013, the clubs initiated the ice rink roofing project with the goal of creating a permanent and optimal training space. After an extensive design phase, the construction was approved and entrusted to the Chilean company Espacio Cubierto Ltda.. This project represents an investment of $595 million for a structure covering 2,616 square meters, thus offering a new dimension to local sports.
An Architectural Challenge Met by Innovation
The central element of the project is the textile roof, designed to meet climatic demands while allowing for the organization of national competitions. The structure is supported by solid metal bases, anchoring a rigid perimeter around the rink. This framework supports a wooden skeleton covered with a high-performance textile membrane, the Tenseo Xtrem TX30-III.
This membrane was chosen for its superior technical characteristics, including its advanced CROSSLINK technology, which offers exceptional durability and resistance. It ensures effective protection against the elements while maximizing the intake of natural light, essential for sports activities. The CROSSLINK top coat formula provides the membrane with significant advantages, such as increased resistance to photo-oxidation and micro-cracking, a smooth surface that reduces dirt accumulation, and simplified maintenance.
A Project Dedicated to Sustainability and Performance
The construction, completed in seven months, demonstrates technical expertise and a strong commitment to sustainable development in the sports field. The Tenseo Xtrem TX30-III membrane proves to be an ideal choice for this type of project, combining performance, aesthetics, and durability, even in harsh or tropical climates.
The Araucanía Skating Association celebrated the completion of this project, which now provides young athletes in Temuco with a training facility that meets their ambitions. This project perfectly illustrates how architecture and engineering can transform a simple sports facility into a true asset for the community.
