Modernizing the Cincinnati Open with High-Performance Shade Solutions
ABOUT
As home to the internationally recognized Cincinnati Open, the Lindner Family Tennis Center required a thoughtful renovation to elevate the fan experience while maintaining the open-air vibrancy that defines live tennis.
Modernizing a World-Class Tennis Venue for Spectator Comfort
One of the oldest and most prestigious tournaments in the United States, the Cincinnati Open is part of the ATP and WTA Masters 1000 series and is considered the second-largest summer tennis tournament in the country, attracting top-ranked players and over 200,000 fans each year. With matches broadcast in over 150 countries, the venue upgrade carried global visibility and importance.
Completed in July 2025, the renovation introduced a series of lightweight canopy and shade structures designed with Soltis Proof W88, Serge Ferrari Group’s advanced composite membrane. The project’s central objective was twofold: to enhance spectator comfort with improved sun and rain protection, and to modernize the facility’s visual identity while ensuring durability and long-term performance. With international broadcasts reaching millions of viewers, the design demanded both technical excellence and aesthetic appeal.
A Seamless Blend of Function and Design
The architectural concept, led by Gensler Austin, sought to integrate sleek canopy structures across the South Match Court, Sponsor Court, food and beverage vendor areas, and adjacent seating zones. In total, 18,000 square feet of white Soltis Proof W88 membranes were installed across 30 canopies of varying sizes to accommodate both fans and functional spaces. These membranes deliver a light, airy appearance that harmonizes with the stadium’s contemporary upgrades while providing critical weather protection.
By emphasizing translucency and visual continuity, the canopies preserve open-air visibility and natural brightness, ensuring that spectators remain connected to the energy of live play. Fans benefit from shaded seating, while strategically placed structures provide additional shelter over courts and adjacent open areas serving food and beverage—striking the perfect balance between comfort, protection, and an immersive stadium experience.
Meeting Technical Challenges with Precision
Designing canopy systems across 1,100 yards of stadium space required solutions that balanced durability, stability, and visual refinement:
- UV resistance and occupant safety: The Soltis Proof W88 membrane blocks harmful rays while allowing light to pass through, creating a bright and welcoming atmosphere.
- Weather resistance: Engineered to withstand wind, heavy rain, and snow loads, ensuring year-round resilience.
- Dimensional stability: Large-span structures remain taut over time, avoiding sagging or deformation.
- Lightweight construction: Reduces structural loads while maintaining tensile strength.
- Aesthetic harmony: The bright white finish aligns with the venue’s modernized look.
We’ve collaborated with Serge Ferrari North America for many years, and our experience has always been exceptional. On this project, the architect introduced and specified a new fabric from Serge Ferrari, and Soltis Proof W88 performed exactly as envisioned—meeting every design, performance, and aesthetic goal.
The Serge Ferrari team provided all the product specs, shared the source details, and delivered exactly what we needed. They were incredibly helpful and responsive with any questions along the way.
Why Soltis Proof W88 Made the Difference
The Soltis Proof W88 membrane was chosen for its waterproof, translucent properties and 10-year warranty, offering assurance of long-term performance. A decisive factor was its 1×1 weave pattern and balanced light transmission, which outperformed alternative materials. The result: a unique, uniform appearance across canopy types that enhances both visual appeal and functional value.
Sustainable by Design
Sustainability played an important role in the renovation. With an eye toward LEED certification and long-term environmental responsibility, the decision to use fabric canopies over heavier metal or HDPE alternatives reflects a commitment to “do more with less.” The Soltis Proof W88 system offers longevity, low maintenance, and a reduced material footprint—aligning with the event’s global broadcast reach and the tournament’s legacy of excellence.
A Venue Ready for the World Stage
The Cincinnati Open is the oldest professional tennis tournament in the United States still held in its original city. Over the years, the tournament evolved into a major event on the tennis calendar. The renovation of the Lindner Family Tennis Center stands as a testament to how thoughtful material selection and design innovation can transform a venue. With sleek, functional canopies installed by Queen City Awning, the project improved comfort and aesthetics while also reinforcing the stadium’s reputation as a premier destination for international tennis. The transformation was further recognized with the nomination for Sports Facility of the Year by Sports Business Journal.
By leveraging the performance and visual advantages of Soltis Proof W88 and dedicated technical support, Serge Ferrari Group played a vital role in delivering a venue that is durable, sustainable, and ready to inspire fans for years to come.
