Integrated Textile Solar Protection at the Heart of Torre de Cristal
About
Serge Ferrari Group contributed to the installation of new solar shading systems for the entrance lobby of Torre de Cristal in Madrid, featuring Soltis Touch membrane.
A Project at Spain’s Tallest Skyscraper
Located in Madrid’s Cuatro Torres Business Area, Torre de Cristal is an iconic example of contemporary architecture. Designed by architect César Pelli and inaugurated in 2009, the 249-meter office tower is the tallest building in Spain, renowned for its elegant, tapered silhouette and crystal-inspired design. Entirely clad in glass, the tower has become a benchmark for both architectural excellence and energy performance.
Serving as the building’s main entrance, the nearly 10-meter-high lobby plays a central role in the user experience. Fully glazed, the space benefits from abundant natural daylight but is also exposed to significant direct solar gain. As part of the lobby’s refurbishment, the design aimed to improve occupant comfort while preserving the space’s transparency and architectural quality. Integrating solar shading systems became an essential solution to control solar heat gain, optimize indoor temperatures, and enhance the functionality of this multifunctional space.
A Soltis Touch Textile Solution Combining Transparency and Comfort
To address these challenges, five roller blinds were installed throughout the lobby. Manufactured and installed by AWMA, a specialist in the development and production of solar shading systems, the blinds feature Serge Ferrari Group’s Soltis Touch membrane.
This micro-perforated composite membrane effectively filters solar heat while maintaining outward visibility. Its performance is based on several key advantages:
- High solar protection, reducing solar heat gain by up to 91%.
- Controlled transparency, providing excellent visual comfort while preserving clear views to the outside.
- Acoustic performance, absorbing up to 45% of sound.
- Outstanding durability and dimensional stability, thanks to Précontraint® technology, which ensures superior mechanical performance and long-term reliability.
- A phthalate-free design and GREENGUARD Gold certification, contributing to healthier indoor air quality.
By incorporating Soltis Touch fabric, these roller blinds enhance the lobby’s overall performance by improving both thermal comfort and daylight quality. They also contribute to the project’s architectural coherence, blending discreetly into an environment defined by glass, transparency, and refined contemporary design.
